Fine Molds presents a 1/72 scale model of the F-4F Phantom II as operated by the German Air Force’s JG71 "Richthofen" Fighter Wing, faithfully capturing this lightweight, streamlined European variant with newly tooled parts and era-specific markings.

Originally adopted in the 1970s as a stopgap due to delays in the Tornado IDS program, the F-4F was a simplified version of the standard Phantom designed specifically for the West German Air Force. Based on the successful RF-4E platform, it returned to a two-seat configuration and was stripped of certain systems to reduce weight—such as one internal fuel tank and air-to-air refueling equipment.

The F-4F was equipped with a simplified radar without illuminator functionality, making it incompatible with AIM-7 Sparrow missiles. Instead, it relied solely on AIM-9 Sidewinders and a nose-mounted cannon for air combat. Visually, this variant is distinguished by movable leading-edge slats (soft wing) and stabilizers without fixed slats, offering a unique profile distinct from other Phantom variants.

A total of 175 units were deployed across four squadrons. By 1983, 110 of them underwent the ICE (Improved Combat Efficiency) upgrade program, replacing their radars with AN/APG-65GY systems, enabling beyond-visual-range targeting with AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. The remaining aircraft were converted for enhanced ground attack roles without radar upgrades.

This kit recreates the distinctive soft wing and slat-less stabilizers using new tooling, allowing for an accurate representation of the F-4F. It includes decal options for aircraft from JG71 Richthofen, both from 1985 and 2013, capturing this aircraft's evolution across decades of service.
