First introduced in 1941 at the outbreak of the German–Soviet War, the PTRS-1941 was a semi-automatic anti-tank rifle designed by Sergei Simonov under direct orders from the Soviet high command. Measuring over two meters long, weighing more than 20 kilograms, and firing newly developed 14.5mm high-caliber rounds in five-shot succession, it delivered extraordinary firepower capable of penetrating early German armor. Though later outmatched by improved tank protection, its long range and tremendous impact paved the way for the lineage of modern anti-materiel rifles. Its compact redesign, the SKS carbine, would go on to become one of the most influential small arms in postwar Soviet weapon design.
